Hello! My name is Avery Maslowsky, and I am a 2019 Runner-Up for the National Student Journalist of the Year competition and the 2019 Pennsylvania Student Journalist of the Year.
In high school, I was the co-editor-in-chief of Conestoga High School’s newspaper, The Spoke. I was also an anchor and producer for our school’s daily morning show, Good Morning Stoga.
This journalism portfolio represents three and a half years spent reporting, fact-checking and storytelling.
People wonder why I’ve devoted myself to journalism, something I’m often told is a “dying craft.” Why I spend my weekends conducting interviews instead of going to the movies. Why on production days, I willingly lock myself in a stuffy classroom till seven at night and rush to make the pages perfect before deadline. Why every minute I’m not working for the paper, I’m working for the broadcast department, TETV. I do all of this because journalism empowers me and enables me to empower my community. Journalism isn’t dead, and it won’t be so long as there’s a truth to tell. It’s so much bigger than just words on a page — it’s the power to say what needs to be said and the courage to say it when others won’t. I’m honored to be a part of that cause.
Welcome to my life.
